Pencil- Ink- Watercolor
Tomhu's careful pencil and ink studies of different trees show the influence of Constable. In his sketchbook there is news clipping of a Constable show in England. His detailed sketches reflect a compulsion to record what the entire eye can take in. We can see this in " Vancouver done around 1886" While researching John H. Roberts's diaries, we realized how much his father influenced and supported Tomhu's painting. One of the ways he seems to have influenced Tomhu was on the long walks they took together. It was from an early age that connection and love of nature was instilled. He write of "going for a walk along the Don with Tomhu Walked as far as the Humber Bay in the afternoon". "waked with Tomhu along the Grand Trunk tracks," 5 and later dairies " going for a walk in Kitsilano and Granville Street" 6 He also supported him by calling Bridgman and Foster Portrait Painter in Toronto and "settled to admit Tomhu as a pupil without time limits - paid $100 , the same to be forfeited if he should leave before the fourth year.7 In 1876 this was a great sum of money, considering that it cost $180 to build the house they were living in! Tomhu's father was willing to invest in his natural talent in art.
